Between nine and ten on Tuesday night Woodford Halse was visited by one of the most appalling storms remembered by the old residents.
Lightning—exceptionally vivid—was almost continuous, the streets were lit up as in the day, and then plunged into weird darkness. Rain came down in torrents, drains were unable to cope with the downfall, and the streets were like little rivers. The thunder crashed almost continuously.
Several houses were flooded.
